West Coast Nature's
Paradise
The West coast is likely to be one of the most spectacular and diversified
natural areas of the world. Within a few hours you are able to see a whole range
of natural wonders. There are the incredible shaved 30 million year old pancake
rocks, untouched rainforest, spectacular natural reflections and the breath
taking twin glaciers, Fox and Franz Josef, which are waiting for you to be
discovered. The West coast is the home of five of the thirteen national parks in
New Zealand.

The Incredible Pancake
Rocks
These limestone rocks started forming 30 million
years ago as tiny fragments of dead sea creatures
and were hidden by the Tasman sea until an
earthquake lifted it to the surface.
Since this event, the sea, the wind and the rain
created the unique shape of this rock formation. |

Franz Josef and Fox
glaciers
Just a few kilometres from the Tasman coast you will
find the twin glaciers.
Have a few minutes walk through the local rainforest
and you are face to face with a 12 km icy mass.
Cross the valley and see the perpetual ice growing
bigger and bigger.
If this is just not enough, join one of the guided
glacier walks, ice climbing or helicopter scenic
tours offered for both glaciers. |

The reflections of Lake
Matheson
Close to Fox Glacier is Lake Matheson. The early
morning is a fantastic time for unsurpassed views of
Mt Cook and the surrounding peaks, reflecting on the
quiet surface of the lake.
An easy 40 minute walk takes you to the first
viewing platform, and a complete circuit of the lake
can be completed in one and a half hours.
